Lady Bird Johnson, former First Lady, has died at home, age 94. She was released from the hospital in late June. Even a 2002 stroke had not kept her from making public appearances.

Born Claudia Alta Taylor and named Lady Bird by an early nursemaid, this First Lady took over the office from a very popular and glamorous predecessor, and managed to make her own impact with her beautification campaign. Her work in promoting the Head Start program, as part of her husband's War on Poverty, is less often credited, as is her role as a businesswoman and ranch manager, taking care of family businesses while her husband made his impact in politics.
