1961: With growing interest in women's rights, and a perceived need for more competent workers to help America compete with the USSR in the Cold War, and a desire to preserve women's traditional roles as wives and mothers, President Kennedy established a commission to examine these issues and make proposals. The result? The Equal Pay Act of 1963, but also, more interest in and dialogue about women's rights. More:
