Sanitary Commission

Many women volunteered to work with the United States Sanitary Commission to support the Union effort in the American Civil War. The women raised money and supplies, organized medical services, provided direct service at the field hospitals, camps, and homes for injured soldiers, and performed many other tasks. They not only made a significant contribution to the war effort, but they prepared for other roles after the war ended. Read more: Sanitary Commission
