Female Spies in the American Civil War

Belle Boyd. Elizabeth Van Lew. Rose Greenhow. Loreta Janeta Velazquez. Harriet Tubman. What do they have in common?

Spying was one of the active roles that some women played in the American Civil War. Because of stereotypes of women, they were often able to move around freely and without suspicion, obtaining information and then communicating it to the other side. Here are some of the more famous (or infamous) of women spies of the American Civil War:
