Headline writers had a difficult time announcing the death of Rupert Pole, describing him as husband, lover, or even "duplicate spouse." Anais Nin married Pole while she was still married to Hugh Guiler, and formally annulled her marriage to Pole about the time her writing brought her widespread attention. But Pole was the one she turned to in her illness, and he also published her diaries in an unexpurgated edition after her death, ensuring continued interest in her history.
