Empress Matilda - Lady of the English

Though she was never crowned queen, she fought for her right to succeed her father as England's ruler in a bitter civil war against her cousin Stephen. Stephen seized the throne, apparently believing that a woman could not rule England. She never won the throne securely for herself -- but she did win it for her son and her descendants.
