How did March come to be Women's History Month?

Monday March 1, 2004
March 1 begins the annual month-long special attention to women's history. If you're visiting the About Women's History site for the first time, welcome! During March, we celebrate the history of women and how women have contributed to history -- but we don't limit it to just March. All year, you'll find quotations from notable women, biographies of notable women, images of women and women's history, and great articles and links for information on the stages and eras of women's history in all aspects of life: politics, religion, education, fashion, family, and more. Start here with a history of how March came to be Women's History Month, and then explore more!
